Cover:

Every Lord Of the Underworld book cover features a unique color as a backdrop. This one focuses on red. And its befitting: Baden is a redhead. He sees red because of his never ending rage.

However I can not say that the cover is enough to make anyone buy just by looking at its cover. Not much magnetism.

Review:

Intense, heated and full of laughter inducing dialogues, this is what you should expect when you pick this book up.

Baden, the former keeper of demon of distrust and now a resurrected spirit, is battling with his new found rage.

He is back thanks to Hades’s serpentine wreaths which enable a spirit to have a solid body.

But it comes at a price: King of Hell’s biding.

For free spirited Baden, slavery is the worst form of torture. However when he meets Katarina while on an errand for the King, Baden has to battle a demon of new kind: attachment to a weak and fragile human.

To make matters extra entertaining, Hades has pitched Pandora and Baden against each other in a gruesome points game. The one who earns most points while completing jobs for Hades, will earn freedom. The loser shall face death.

Katarina is forcefully wed to Aleksander, a smuggler and a drug dealer, responsible for her loved ones deaths. He has blackmailed her into saying her vows by abducting her beloved dogs. Katarina, whose purpose in life is rehabilitation of shunned dogs, will do anything to save her pets. Even marrying her enemy.

When Baden is ordered to get back a prized relic from Alek for Hades, he is forced to blackmail the blackmailer himself. He kidnaps Katarina in order to pressurize the ruthless Alek into giving up the coin.

Meanwhile, the wreaths are wrecking havoc. Something sinister and bloodthirsty is residing in Baden and demands he eliminate every possible threat. William, sensing Baden’s simmering rage, tells him to leave the fortress to avoid the risk of hurting his friends.

Baden, busy with his tasks doesn’t mind. When Katarina comes into the mix, Baden brings her home.

But controlling the beast is not easy and Baden has to watch his every step. He can not allow himself to fall for the bride, for the fear that the beast will hurt her.

Katarina at first, tries to resist Baden. She is appalled by his indifference towards violence. Soon, though, his intense nature piques her interest.

They fight, they quarrel. And still Baden is wary of her weakness.

A pair of puppies attach themselves with Katarina.

Meanwhile, things are heating up in the underworld.

Will Katarina be able to convince Baden of her strength? Will Baden see past his overprotective nature and accept her for who she is: A vulnerable human? Will he be able to free himself from being Hades’s slave?

My Opinion:

The Darkest Torment is back on track with original Gena Showalter charm that was what captured my interest in this series.

Somewhere around Amun’s book, the series lost its original magic a bit. Gena’s writing style changed and even though the plots were obviously well developed, they somehow didn’t exude the magic of the early books. Strider’s book was an exception and even Kane’s made for a good read.

Baden’s book  is just what a lord book should be: entertaining, hilarious, intense, just-can’t-put-down and having a good plot.

Katarina is fierce and fiery heroine. Though her tender side is what is spotlighted the most. She loves animals, especially dogs. Gena’s fans will realize that Katharina feels a lot like her.

Gena loves dogs.

Rating: 8 out of 10
