The Wedding Pact: a review

Review
Beautifully written and engaging.
James Halloran is a reluctant mafioso. Part of one of Boston’s powerful families, he takes it upon himself to protect his family from threats , even though he doesn’t want this lifestyle. Things get complicated in the form of Carrigan o Malley: she is stealing his heart and he’s not sure he wants it back.
Carrigan o Malley detests having  control taken away from her. At least, the little control she has over her heart.
But when it comes to James, she is willing to give up control.
To make matters worse, their families are enemies. Her father is planning to marry her off to further his family’s interests. She has no choice but to say yes to an arranged marriage or else she will have to face her father’s disapproval.

Will they be able to look past their backgrounds and try to be together?
My Rating:  5 out of 6.

Mood Recommendation: A good enough read, if you are into bad boys and fiery girls.

The Wedding Pact by Katee Robert

Date of Publication: April 26, 2016

Blurb

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert continues her smoking-hot series about the O’Malleys-wealthy, powerful, and full of scandalous family secrets.

Carrigan O’Malley has always known her arranged marriage would be more about power and prestige than passion. But after one taste of the hard-bodied, whiskey-voiced James Halloran, she’s ruined for anyone else. Too bad James and his family are enemy number 1.

Hallorans vs. O’Malleys-that’s how it’s always been. James should be thinking more about how to expand his family’s empire instead of how silky Carrigan’s skin is against his and how he can next get her into his bed. Those are dangerous thoughts. But not nearly as dangerous as he’ll be if he can’t get what he wants: Carrigan by his side for the rest of their lives.

About Katee Robert

Katee Robert learned to tell stories at her grandpa’s knee. Her favorites then were the rather epic adventures of The Three Bears, but at age twelve she discovered romance novels and never looked back.

Though she dabbled in writing, life got in the way-as it often does-and she spent a few years traveling, living in both Philadelphia and Germany. In between traveling and raising her two wee ones, she had the crazy idea that she’d like to write a book and try to get published.

Her first novel was an epic fantasy that, God willing, will never see the light of day. From there, she dabbled in YA and horror, before finally finding romance. Because, really, who wouldn’t want to write entire books about the smoking-hot relationships between two people?

She now spends her time-when not lost in Far Reach worlds-playing imaginary games with her wee ones, writing, ogling men, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Discover your authentic self: A review

Review

When I picked up this book, I was expecting a step by step guide to discover who you really are.
However it was clear from the beginning that it is not that type of book.
It is a type of reference book that you pick up when you need a dose of motivation.

The book is divided into sections and each section focuses on specific areas of your life.

For example there is a section that deals with childhood experiences. What you were made to believe as a child, what you were expected to be and behave, all shape up who you are ,but your real self gets suppressed in an effort to confirm. This section deals with psychology and all the terms like introversion, extraversion, feelers ,thinkers etc.
A thought provoking section.

Other sections include  embracing your passions, relationships, intuition, purpose etc.
And each section has short essays. Some cool techniques are also included like finding your passion, and about dreams.

So many things will move you or resonate with you. They will identify what you are experiencing. But at the same time , the book will leave you disappointed and wanting more information.
You might ask: OK this is the problem, how do I solve it?
And unfortunately the book might hint at vague and general solutions but not enough practical ones.
There are techniques and exercises, some really interesting ones. But detailed solutions were not enough.

The book is the type which makes you ask questions and the essays are intriguing.

My rating: 6 out of 10

Recommendation: This book is an advice book for a variety of areas. It hopes to explain about personality in a deeper way.

Revolution by Jessica Frances: A review

revolution.jpg
Cover: It’s good. The font doesn’t seem to fit with the theme of the story, though.

Review:

All humans deserve to be free.

Revolution is a dystopian novel. Humans are treated as lowly beings. There have been a lot of dystopian novels where humans maybe advanced in technology but lacking in warmth and compassion in the society. Revolution revolves around the same concept except here the human’s conditions are really really worse. In fact they are ruled by their superior genetically enhanced counterparts and have no rights. They are kept as slaves, made to fight each other for the Superiors entertainment, bred forcefully and slaughtered. Basically they are looked down upon.
Tilly,  Tiger Lilly, is a pet human. She is a slave. Caged since she was a baby, she has grown up to be a strong young girl. Being one of the few who had a nurturing caretakers in the form of her owner’s children, she never lost her spirit.
But she fell in love with Johnny, her captive’s son. This is strictly forbidden and causes Johnny to lose his life. Afraid for Tilly’s life, Charlotte, Johnny’s sister and Tilly’s best friend, arranges for her to escape.
Tilly must test her strength trying to survive the harsh world of Superiors. She discovers there is a group of rogue humans living in the forest. Because of her thirst for freedom and determination to not let Johnny’s sacrifice be in vain, Tilly sets off to be a part of this human group.
The group’s purpose is freedom for their race. And Tilly becomes a part of this revolution.

Johnny is a genetically enhanced human. All his life, his every action is preplanned by his father. But Johnny cannot help it when he falls for their slave, Tilly.
It is a crime to have feelings for lowly humans, a crime for which Johnny will have to pay for.

Johnny and Tilly are ripped apart. But they are determined to change the world.
The book is from Tilly’s and Johnny’s point of views.

Pros and Con’s:

Does this book grip you or what?
It pulls you right in.
Packed with action.
The chemistry between Johnny and Tilly is amazing, it is beautiful although it does gets a bit cheesy. Especially the romance scenes, they were a bit too much. They should have been more subtle, I think.
The strongest point of this book is the portrayal of emotions. They are powerfully described. The author manages to convey Tilly’s fear, her hope, her determination and Johnny’s intense feelings of care and love for her, in a beautiful way.

My Rating: 7 out of 10

Mood Recommendations: This book makes for an entertaining read. Go for it if you read dystopia genre.

Revolution by Jessica Frances
Publication date: January 26th 2016
Genres: Dystopia, New Adult

Description
I was raised in a world where humans no longer rule.
In the past, we made a terrible mistake by creating a new species we thought would serve us as our army, which led to our downfall.
There was a war, we lost, and many lives were massacred. It was the end of life as we knew it and the beginning of a hell we were now trapped in. We became enslaved to what we now called Superiors, becoming pets to them, simply there to entertain.
In a world so miserable, I managed to do the unthinkable: I fell in love. But even that was doomed, because to love a Superior was forbidden.
What the rest of the Superiors didn’t know was how deeply a human could love or how resilient we became when we were hurt.
The Superiors never could have imagined an uprising, which was why they never saw it coming.
Humans deserved to be free, and I would stop at nothing to deliver that promise.
My name is Tilly, and I am still alive with one sole purpose: to begin a revolution.

~

I had been raised to believe humans were worthless. We owned them and controlled them, and when we were done with them, we threw them away. Therefore, I never thought I would ever feel more for Tilly than disinterest. I never expected to want to save her.
It was forbidden for a Superior to love a human. No one had ever crossed that line, but I did. I fell madly in love with her, so it was no surprise how we ended up.
I was raised to be a soldier, and that was what I was always going to be. However, I was not a soldier for the Superiors, not anymore.
I became a soldier for humans, and I would stop at nothing to help them. They deserved to be free, and I would die protecting them.
My name is Johnny, and I am here with one sole purpose: to finish a revolution.

Review:
This book is hands down hilarious. Katie’s world is turned upside down when her family loses their wealth due to his fathers embezzling.
And right when she is being evicted from her own house, a guy towing her car manages to irritate her further.
But it’s a moment that is destined to change her life for better or for worse.
Adam Nash comes from the opposite side of town. He is not wealthy and is a player. He takes it as a personal challenge to impress Katie and make her fall in love with him. Katie tries her best to keep him away but they both end up falling for each other.
But its not a straightforward love story. Katie’s mother would never approve of Adam. Adam doesn’t fit into Katie’s plans for her future. He works at a garage and Katie has higher ambitions.
Adam feels she deserves better than him, but he is willing to do anything to please her.

Will they be able to overcome the obstacles in their way and be able to overlook their status differences.

Its a good book. Funny too.
Though it does get a bit repetitive sometimes. Especially when Adam keeps promising himself not to hurt Katie but keeps on forgetting his promise and acts as a jerk.
Their chemistry is not so strong either and takes time to develop. Moreover the characters seem confused.

Go for this book if you like light romance, with the guy chasing the girl and making her fall for him. Where the hero is a bad boy and the girl is a goody two shoes.
Be warned though, it tends to get a bit overboard sometimes with the language, in an attempt to be funny.

My Rating: 6 out of 10
Mood Recommendation:

Read this when you want to feel lighter and when you are bored. Don’t expect a spectacular ending though, its pretty cliche.

Library Journal

For a select group of girls, the Glittering Court offers a shot at a life
they’ve only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. To high-born
Adelaide, whose wealthy family is forcing her into a loveless marriage, the
Glittering Court represents something else: the chance to chart her own
destiny, and adventure in an unspoiled, prosperous new land across the sea.

After a chance meeting with the dazzling Cedric Thorn, Adelaide poses as a
servant to join the crop of impoverished girls he promises to transform into
proper ladies. But her familiarity with upper class life comes with a price:
she must hide her identity from her new friends, mysterious refugee Mira and
fiery former laundress Tamsin, and most importantly, from Cedric himself—even
though she’s falling in love with him.

Everything begins to crumble when Cedric discovers Adelaide’s ruse, and she
catches the eye of a powerful young governor, who wants her for a wife. She
didn’t leave the gilded cage of her old life behind just to become someone
else’s property. But nothing is as daunting—or as wonderful—as the potent,
forbidden attraction simmering between Adelaide and Cedric. One that, if acted
on, would make them both outcasts in a wild, dangerous, uncharted world, and
possibly lead them to their deaths.
